The transition to a low-carbon economy has begun. The threat of climate change is now widely acknowledged by governments and business and from 1 July 2012 we will have price on carbon in Australia. Already more than 1000 businesses need to report on their carbon footprint under the NGER Act, and it is estimated that about 500 organisations will have a direct obligation to purchase carbon credits under the carbon pricing mechanism ('the carbon tax').
In addition, the Australian energy industry is facing a period of price uncertainty due to major upgrades to the distribution network and a future price on carbon. Add to this a demand for energy which is expected to grow and outpace supply, all of which translate into a substantial rise in electricity prices over the next few years. Also, the market place of the 21st century is increasingly conscience-focused, which translates into a growing demand for organisations to report on their sustainability efforts and their triple bottom line.
All those market forces mean the business landscape is being transformed and new risks and opportunities are emerging, which business leaders will need to understand and respond to. While adjusting to the new carbon constrained economy may take time and investment, organisations that adopt carbon management best practices early will be able to maximise the benefits from moving first. We can help your company to navigate through all aspects of these emerging risks and opportunities.
Environmental sustainability is all about doing more with less, which ultimately means your business runs more cost efficiently and effectively, creating a competitive advantage.
